About Martell

Martell was founded in 1715 by Jean Martell, a merchant from the Channel Islands who settled in the town of Cognac, making it the oldest of the major cognac houses still trading today. The house is now part of the Pernod Ricard group. Martell’s defining style leans on eaux-de-vie from the Borderies, the smallest of the six official Cognac growing areas, which brings a distinctive floral, nutty note that sets Martell apart from houses that lean more heavily on Grande Champagne.

Cognac is a protected appellation: it must be distilled twice in copper pot stills from white grapes grown in the delimited Cognac region, then aged in French oak, with the V.S., V.S.O.P., and X.O. grades defined by the minimum age of the youngest eau-de-vie in the blend. These rules are governed by the Bureau National Interprofessionnel du Cognac. Martell’s Cordon Bleu, first blended in 1912 for the house’s 200th anniversary, remains the signature expression and one of the most awarded cognac blends in the category’s history.
