About Suntory

The house was founded in 1899 by Shinjiro Torii, who began as a wine importer and blender in Osaka before turning his full attention to whisky. In 1923, he opened the Yamazaki distillery in a valley between Osaka and Kyoto, choosing the site for its exceptionally soft water, high humidity, and the dramatic seasonal temperature swings that accelerate and deepen cask maturation. Yamazaki is widely credited as Japan’s first malt whisky distillery. A second distillery followed in 1973 at Hakushu, deep in the Japanese Southern Alps. The high altitude and cool mountain air produce a distinctly fresh and faintly smoky style that contrasts sharply with the richer Yamazaki character.

Hibiki, introduced in 1989, was designed as the house’s prestige blended whisky, drawing liquid from Yamazaki, Hakushu, and the Chita grain distillery, and bottling it in an iconic 24-faceted decanter representing the 24 seasons of the Japanese calendar. The entry and mid-range whisky expressions, Kakubin, Toki, and Chita, each serve a distinct purpose: Kakubin for the classic Japanese highball, Toki as a lighter, more polished everyday blend, and Chita as a showcase for single-grain Japanese whisky.

Beyond whisky, Suntory extended the same precision philosophy into craft spirits. Roku gin (roku means six in Japanese) is built around six native Japanese botanicals selected across the four seasons: sakura flower, sakura leaf, yuzu peel, sencha tea, gyokuro tea, and sansho pepper. Haku vodka is distilled from 100% Japanese white rice and filtered through bamboo charcoal for a clean, gently round character. Toki vs Kakubin: Both are highball bottles, but they serve slightly different moods. Kakubin is the workhorse, grain-light, easy to mix in volume. Toki is a step up in finesse, built with Hakushu malt and Yamazaki malt at the core, and it shows in the glass. Steady pick if you want the same serve with a little more going on.

Yamazaki vs Hakushu vs Hibiki: Yamazaki and Hakushu are single malts from different distilleries with opposing personalities. Yamazaki is warm and fruit-rich, shaped by valley humidity and diverse cask types. Hakushu is cool and herb-green, shaped by mountain air and lighter cask treatment. Hibiki Harmony sits between them as a blend of both houses plus Chita grain whisky. If you are new to Japanese single malts, Hibiki Harmony at RM480 is the most forgiving and crowd-pleasing starting point before you commit to a single malt.

Roku vs Roku Sakura Bloom: The standard Roku (RM145) is the year-round bottle, built on its six Japanese botanicals for a versatile, food-friendly gin. The Sakura Bloom edition (RM165) adds a seasonal cherry blossom dimension to the nose and finish. Both work well in a gin and tonic or a Negroni. The standard Roku is the better everyday pour; the Sakura Bloom is worth picking up for gifting or a spring occasion.

How to Choose Your Suntory Bottle

For everyday highballs: Kakubin at RM145 is the bottle behind the Japanese izakaya-style whisky soda. It is grain-light, mixes clean, and does not demand careful sipping. Toki at RM205 is the step up if you want more malt character in the same highball format. Both are in stock and ready to go.

For the curious step into Japanese whisky: Chita at RM215 is underrated. It is a single grain whisky from Suntory’s dedicated Chita distillery, soft and cereal-sweet with no smoke, which makes it an easy entry point for drinkers who find malts too intense. Hibiki Harmony at RM480 is the other gateway, and arguably the more impressive gift bottle in the range under RM500.

For gifting at CNY, corporate events, or milestone occasions: Hibiki Japanese Harmony at RM480 is the most reliable choice. The 24-faceted bottle presents exceptionally well, everyone in the room recognises it, and the flavour genuinely delivers on the price. Step up to the Hibiki Blossom Harmony 2023 edition at RM1,048 for a more distinctive limited expression when you want to make an impression.

For the single malt enthusiast: Hakushu Distiller’s Reserve at RM540 and Yamazaki Distiller’s Reserve at RM565 are the accessible entry points into Suntory’s malt range. Hakushu for the lighter, herb-fresh drinker; Yamazaki for the richer, fruit-and-oak drinker. Yamazaki 12 Years at RM875 is the benchmark expression that rewards serious, unhurried sipping. Shiok bottle for a milestone birthday or a quiet evening pour.

For gin drinkers: Roku Gin at RM145 is the house’s flagship gin, built from six Japanese botanicals. It balances beautifully in a gin and tonic, a Negroni, or neat over ice. The Roku Gin Sakura Bloom at RM165 adds a cherry blossom character for a seasonal or gifting angle.

For vodka: Haku at RM150 is distilled from 100% Japanese white rice, then filtered through bamboo charcoal. It has a gently round, slightly sweet character that works well chilled neat or in clean cocktails where you want the spirit to show.
