The Cognac Grading System, in Plain English

Every cognac is a blend of eaux-de-vie (individually distilled batches) of different ages, and the grade on the label is set by the youngest component in that blend, not the average. A VSOP might contain eau-de-vie aged 15 years, but if even a small portion is only 4 years old, the bottle is graded VSOP. That is why two bottles carrying the same grade can taste quite different: the house style and the older components in the blend do the rest of the work.

The BNIC enforces three headline grades: VS (minimum 2 years), VSOP (minimum 4 years) and XO (minimum 10 years, a rule tightened from 6 years in 2018 to formally separate XO from the older Napoleon tier). You will also see Napoleon (minimum 6 years, sitting between VSOP and XO) and Hors d’Age (no fixed minimum, but always well above XO in practice) on some shelves, though VS, VSOP and XO cover the vast majority of what you will actually buy.

VS stands for “Very Special,” and it is the youngest legal grade, minimum 2 years in oak. In practice most VS blends carry more age than the floor, but the profile stays youthful: bright fruit, citrus peel and a grapey freshness with a lighter touch of oak spice than older grades. VS is built for mixing. Its clean fruit character holds up in a highball or a cognac and soda without getting lost, and it is the grade we recommend for anyone building their first cognac and tonic.

VSOP Explained: Age, Taste, Price

VSOP stands for “Very Superior Old Pale,” minimum 4 years in oak, and it is the grade most Malaysian households actually keep at home. The extra ageing rounds out the fruit into honey, dried apricot, vanilla and baking spice, with a fuller body and a longer, warmer finish than VS. VSOP is versatile enough to drink neat, on ice, or in a mixed serve, which is exactly why it dominates the dinner-table and gifting occasions.

XO stands for “Extra Old,” minimum 10 years, and it is where cognac stops being a mixer and becomes a sipping spirit. Extended oak time brings dried fig, dark chocolate, leather and rancio, the deep, slightly nutty complexity that only comes from years of slow oxidation. XO is the grade you pour for the table that only gathers once or twice a year: a wedding, a reunion dinner, a celebration worth marking with a short, neat pour.

At 700ML, XO on our shelf runs RM470 to RM695: Courvoisier XO at RM470, Rémy Martin XO at RM610, Hennessy XO at RM665, and Martell Cordon Bleu XO at RM695. How Do You Read a Cognac Label?

Once you know the grade, three more label details matter. The producer’s house style (Hennessy, Martell, Rémy Martin, Courvoisier and Camus each blend toward a distinct flavour signature, even at the same grade). The region, when stated: Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne cognacs, often labelled “Fine Champagne” when blended, come from the most prized chalk soils and tend to age more slowly and elegantly than cognac from other Charente sub-regions. And the ABV, which is legally fixed at a minimum 40 percent for cognac, so you will not see meaningful strength variation between bottles the way you might with whisky.

What the label will not tell you directly is the actual average age of the blend. That figure lives with the producer and rarely appears on the bottle. Treat the grade as a reliable floor and let the house style and price guide the rest.

A Mini Cognac Glossary

• Eau-de-vie: the clear spirit distilled from wine, before oak ageing turns it into cognac.
• Rancio: the nutty, slightly savoury complexity that develops in very old eaux-de-vie, a signature XO and Hors d’Age note.
• Fine Champagne: a blend of Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne eaux-de-vie, with at least 50 percent Grande Champagne.
• Master Blender: the person responsible for combining eaux-de-vie of different ages and origins into a house’s consistent style.
